Biography of
Campbell. B. Singleton, III
Rev. Dr.
Campbell B. Singleton, III, is the Senior Pastor
of the historic Union Baptist Church, Montclair, New Jersey. Prior to accepting
the call from Union Baptist Church, Dr. Singleton served seventeen years as an
Associate Minister in the prominent Trinity Baptist Church, Bronx New York. It
is here that his pastoral ministry was greatly influenced, especially by its
eclectic liturgical patterns of worship with its rich movements, symbols, pageantry
and full repertoire of musical expressions. Dr. Singleton was ordained to the
Gospel Ministry in Trinity, on October, 1988.
Currently, Dr.
Singleton serves on the program staff of ABC Metropolitan New York as the
Minister of Mission Support. He is responsible for: mobilizing churches to fund ABC
ministries through the mission program. His administrative skills, understanding
of program ministry design and implementation and collaborative leadership has
been shaped here.
Dr. Singleton’s
academic credentials include a Doctor of Ministry degree from Hartford Seminary
in Hartford, Connecticut (June, 2011); a Masters of Divinity degree from Union
Theological Seminary in the City of New York (May, 1994); and a Bachelor of
Science Degree from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut (May,
1990). During
the commencement exercises at Union Seminary, he was awarded the Maxwell
Fellowship Award by Auburn Theological Seminary for the student who
demonstrated promise for excellence in parish ministry. Dr. Singleton has received multiple Certificates of Participation and
special training from institutions such as: Lombard Mennonite Peace Center’s
Mediation Skills Training Institute; Indiana University School of Philanthropy:
The Fund Raising School; and North General Hospital Palliative Care Training
Program.
Dr. Singleton’s
ministerial and community highlights include coordinating a 22-member
delegation to South Africa and teaching and preaching in the churches of the Baptist
Convention of South Africa (December, 1988); preaching at the Closing Assembly
of the Baptist Convention of Haiti (July, 2001); consulting for Claflin
University’s Vocational Life Program, Orangeburg, South Carolina, (2003 –
2008); preaching in the Black History Preaching Series, Union Theological
Seminary (February, 2011); serving as Interim Minister at Devoe Street Baptist
Church, Brooklyn, New York (March, 2009 – December, 2012); and leading an ABC,
Metro New York capital campaign that raised over $400,000 to construct and
furnish a Surgical Theater and Recovery Room in Cap Haitien, Hati (2007 – 2013).
Dr. Singleton has had several items published including his stewardship sermon
entitled the “Grace of Giving” by the African American Pulpit (Fall, 2007). He
has been a member of Kappa Alpha Psi since December, 1986.
Since his arrival at Union Baptist Church
(January, 2013), Dr. Singleton has introduced a unique Watchnight observation;
led a Gun-Buy Back Program that took in over 1,000 guns off the streets; established
a Jazz Vesper program; designed a Mother’s “Give Me a Break” week-long celebration;
crafted a Father’s Day Tailgate Block Party; instituted a Living Legacy program; led a sustained protest against the
Star Ledger’s biased reporting in the Sunday, July 14th Final
Edition; coordinated a Four-Week End of Life preaching and teaching series; developed
a series of Town Hall Meetings for communal engagement of race and justice and
shaped a Three Week Bible Interpretation Conference.
Dr. Singleton was born in Waterbury,
Connecticut and is married to the lovely Nicola Black- Singleton. They are the
proud parents of one son, Campbell B. Singleton, IV.
